ABSTRACT: ieldObservationsofCyclicalandCumulativePipeandGroundMovementsinPermafrostTerrain,NormanWellsPipeline,NorthwestTerritoriesCanadaSharonL.Smith&MargoM.BurgessGeologicalSurveyofCanada,NaturalResources,Canada,Ottawa,Ontario,CanadaABSTRACTPipeandgroundmovementshavebeendocumentedsincethemid1990sattwopermafrostsitesinthefirst5kmoftheNormanWellsPipelineroutetoinvestigatetheeffectofseasonalcyclingofoilinlettemperature.Seasonalpipemovementsofabout0.2-0.5mhaveoccurredinresponsetoheaveandsettlementrelatedtothecyclicalpipeandgroundtemperatures.Atonesite,wherepipeupliftinitiallyoccurredinresponsetothecyclicalpipetemperature,agravelbermhasbeeneffectiveinreversingtheupwardmovementandinreducingseasonalmovements.Cumulativepipesettlementupto0.3mhasoccurredattheothersiteandlikelyresultedfromincreasingthawpenetration.Cumulativegroundsettlementhasbeengreaterthan0.3m.
