ABSTRACT: ferencesbetweenrightandleftportionsofair-convectioncrushed-rockembankmentinpermafrostregionsYanhuMu,WeiMa,GuoyuLi&YongzhiLiuStateKeyLaboratoryofFrozenSoilsEngineering,ColdandAridRegionsEnvironmentalandEngineeringResearchInstitute,ChineseAcademyofSciences,Lanzhou,Gansu,ChinaYunchengMaoGansuProvincialCommunicationsResearchInstituteCo.,Ltd.ABSTRACTTherightandleftslopesofair-convectioncrushed-rockembankment(ACCE)commonlyexperienceconsiderablethermaldifferencesinpermafrostregions.ThosethermaldifferencescouldleadtoanasymmetricalthermalregimewithinandbeneaththeACCE,andthenresultindifferentdeformationsontheembankment.BasedoninsitugroundtemperaturealongtheQinghai-TibetRailway,thispaperchosethreemonitoringsitesofU-shapedair-convectioncrushed-rockembankmentwithdifferentorientationstoanalysisthethermaldifferencesbetweenrightandleftportionsoftheembankmentandunderlyingpermafrost.Theanalysisincludedcomparisonsoftemperatures,n-factors,freezingandthawingindicesofnear-surfacegroundsontheembankmentshouldersandthenaturalgrounds,andalsoincludestherelationshipsbetweenthethermaldifferencesandsolarradiationandwind-forcedconvectionoftheembankment.Finally,twodifferentconditionsofthethermalregimebeneaththeembankmentwerepresentedbygroundtemperatureprofilesoftheembankmentshouldersandthenaturalgrounds.Theresultsindicatedthatfortheembankmentwithorientationofnearnorthtosouth,thethermaldifferenceswassmallandthusthermalregimebeneaththeembankmentwasalmostsymmetrical;butforembankmentwithorientationofneareasttowest,inducedbysingleordoubleeffectsofthesolarradiationandthewind-forcedconvection,thethermaldifferencesweresignificantandconsequentlyledtoasevereasymmetricalthermalregimebeneaththeembankment.
