ABSTRACT: The main objective of this investigation was to analyze the consolidation behavior of tailings in conjunction with soil consistency that captures physicochemical interactions. Based on published data, the large strain consolidation behavior of six fine-grained soil slurries was examined. It was found that normalized void ratio (e/eL) best describes volume compressibility whereas liquidity index (LI) best explains the hydraulic conductivity. In both cases, power laws were found to be the best-fit equations. Additional data over the entire range of sedimentation, transition, and consolidation are required to validate the observed relationships.
