ABSTRACT: The Urmia-Tabriz Shahid Kalantari highway embankment in Iran experienced more than one meter of settlement due to the consolidation of the peaty foundation (Urmia peat). The consolidation and direct shear tests were conducted on samples of peat and the relationship between the key mechanical and physical properties of peat was investigated. The results show that the amount of organic matter (degree of decomposition) and initial void ratio are the two important factors which control the mechanical behaviour of Urmia peat. Also it was found that the C/Cc concept of compressibility is applicable to Urmia peat.
