ABSTRACT: Recent advances in soft clay improvement that involves the use of vacuum dewatering and deep dynamic compaction are described in this paper. The working principles of the series of invention termed fiHigh Vacuum Densification Methodfl are described, followed by a discussion of advantages in terms of cost and time saving. Two case studies are presented to elucidate the practical HVDM process. Detailed observations from instrumentation at the Ningbo Port Project provided in-depth knowledge of the soil improvement mechanisms associated with HVDM.
