ABSTRACT: Constant volume simple shear tests have been shown to provide enhanced means of simulating truly undrained behaviour in sands and clays. However, there is a doubt in applicability of constant volume simple shear tests for unsaturated materials. This paper aims to investigate the effect of degree of saturation on the monotonic response of constant volume tests on fine grained soils, in this case silty-sized beads were adopted to simulate shear behaviour of actual silty tailings. It was found that the constant volume response of dry and partially saturated specimens with different degrees of saturation at same void ratio are identical for silty material that matric suction is low enough (<20 kPa) in unsaturated condition.
