ABSTRACT: An experimental laboratory investigation on spatial deformation beneath reinforced and unreinforced embankments using nonintrusive method was performed. Transparent clay was used to model the clay foundation soil. The transparent artificial clay was made from amorphous silica powder with the same refractive index as pore fluid. Deformation measurements were made using laser source, a line-generating lens and a digital camera capturing images of deformations through a Plexiglas tank. The two-dimensional spatial deformation patterns were obtained by correlating consecutive images using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The results of laboratory investigation are discussed in this paper.
