ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of temperature on the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) of unsaturated soils. Physical processes such as water permeability, conductivity, and shear strength of unsaturated soils are a function of the SWCC. While the SWCC is generally assumed to be a unique relationship for a soil for all practical purposes, factors such as temperature and volume change can affect the SWCC and in turn alter the soil properties which are affected by it. The influence of temperature on the SWCC is examined using two commonly used SWCC fitting functions, namely van Genuchten (1980), and Fredlund & Xing (1994). A rational approach for estimating the parameters used in these models as a function of temperature is presented. This approach estimates the effects of temperature on the air entry value of the model by applying first principles and the theoretical relationship between capillary rise and temperature.
