ABSTRACT: Acid mine drainage (AMD) is often treated using lime based active treatment, which generates sludge containing mainly precipitates of metal hydroxides, gypsum, and unreacted lime. Different options of sludge management are available, including storage in decantation ponds. Some investigations are being conducted to evaluate the potential use of tailings-, waste rock-, and silty soil-sludge mixtures as dry cover materials for mine site rehabilitation. Thus, the impact of the sludge content in the -mixtures on the chemical stability and hydrogeotechnical properties are studied. This paper presents the effect of sludge content on the grain-size distribution, relative density, saturated hydraulic conductivity, compactibility, and shrinkage behavior of soil-sludge mixtures (SSM). The impact of initial water content of the sludge and soil is also investigated. Results are presented and discussed with regards to the potential use of SSM as a dry cover.
