ABSTRACT: Triaxial compression data from tests on granite displayed attributes of traditional elastic-plastic behaviour. This paper summarises a simple approach for obtaining long-term strength from these short-term tests. The derivation of properties used to define both rock strength and microcrack-induced dilation, which were independent of either loading rate or stress history, is described. The results of numerical analyses of rock failure and rock damage using unmodified elastic-plastic constitutive models currently available in commercial engineering analysis software are presented.
