Hydrogeology of The Pas Area of Manitoba

ABSTRACT: The Pas area has been the subject of relatively few studies of the interesting aspects of hydrogeology that exist in this area of northern Manitoba. This paper presents an interesting case of a reworked buried channel that exists in the Palaeozoic bedrock. The region is underlain by predominantly Silurian dolomite. A channel was eroded away, which resulted in a substantial valley which extends throughout the area. A large karstic environment developed later, which resulted in the karstic features, and the valley itself, being infilled with clays, silts, and sands of the Cretaceous period. Some amount of recent reworking of this channel has had a significant impact on the current location of the Saskatchewan River. This paper looks at some of the historical cross sections that were developed in the early 1970™s, which have been updated with numerous recent water well and test hole logs. In addition, the groundwater supply aspects of the area are also addressed.

RÉSUMÉ: La région de Pas a été le sujet de relativement peu d'études des aspects intéressants de l'hydrogéologie qui existent dans ce secteur de Manitoba nordique. Cet article présente un cas intéressant d'un canal enterré retouché qui existe dans la roche en place de Palaeozoic. La région est étée à la base par la dolomite principalement silurienne. Un canal a été érodé loin, qui a eu comme conséquence une vallée substantielle qui se prolonge dans tout le secteur. Un grand environnement karstique s'est développé plus tard, qui a eu comme conséquence les dispositifs karstiques, et la vallée elle-même, étant infilled avec des argiles, des vases, et des sables de la période crétacée.
