ABSTRACT: In densely populated areas, tunneling can cause ground movements which may induce distortion and in some cases cause damage to the overlying structures and foundations. Traditionally, the methods used in practice for the estimation of the damage to structures caused by settlements due to tunneling are generally based on two non-interacting procedures. A geotechnical analysis is first carried out to estimate the Greenfield settlements due to tunneling. The estimated settlements are then imposed to the structure in the second procedure to assess the resulting damage to the structure. However, the tunnel-soil-structure interaction may alter the calculated settlements significantly and should be considered. This paper explores this interaction problem considering a number of parameters such as the tunneling processes, construction sequence, proximity, burial depth, the associated ground movement and possible damage to adjacent buildings. Also, the effect of the existing structure on the developed displacements, moments and thrusts in the tunnel lining was studied.
