ABSTRACT: Landfills are considered one of the major sources of methane (CH4) emission, which is one of the abundant anthropogenic greenhouse gases. Landfill methane can be biologically oxidized when it passes through reactive biological cover soils or biocovers. The mechanical behaviour of biocovers can affect methane oxidation rate but limited researches have focused on mechanical behaviour of biocovers. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive experimental investigation on compost and compost-sand mixtures (3:1, 1:1, and 1:3 w/w) to evaluate the compaction, shear strength, and compressibility properties of compost based biocovers. From the direct shear tests, cohesion was found to vary from 2.1 to 19.7 kPa. Based on consolidation tests, coefficient of consolidation were in range of 1.71 to 0.63 m2/ year which is a function of moisture and organic content of samples.
