Assessment of Screw Pile Lateral Load Performance in Cohesive Soils Considering Disturbance due to Installation

ABSTRACT: The disturbance produced in cohesive soils by screw pile installation is discussed. A procedure to assess the potential reduction of undrained shear strength of stiff cohesive soils due to the disturbance caused by screw pile installation is outlined. The procedure is based on the analysis of simple index and mechanical properties of soil. The influence that the helix size has on the potential soil disturbance is also discussed. The proposed procedure is applied to the interpretation of the results obtained from two pile lateral load tests.

RÉSUMÉ: Le dérangement produit dans de sols cohésifs par l'installation de pieus à vis est discutée. Une procédure pour évaluer la réduction potencielle de la force de cissaillement non-drainée du sols cohésifs rigides causé par le dérangement qui donne l'installation de pieus à vis est soulignée. Cette procédure se base sur l'analyse de propriétées mécaniques et d'index simples du sol. L'influence que la dimension de l'hélice a sur le dérangement poténciel du sol est discuté. La procédure proposée s'appliqué à l'interprétation des résultats obtenus à partir de deux essais en charge de pieu latérales.
