ABSTRACT: As a result of age, changes to the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Dam Safety Guidelines, and performance concerns; Manitoba Hydro identified a requirement to upgrade the existing Pinawa Diversion Dam. The Pinawa Diversion Dam was originally constructed in 1906 as a concrete and wooden stop-log control structure supporting the Pinawa ised by constructing a rockfill dam with a sand and gravel upstream seal, burying the old control structure in place. The rehabilitation design of the dam included; maintaining riparian flows downstream of the structure, improving stability, eliminating internal erosion concerns, raising the crest elevation, and meeting CDA Dam Safety Guidelines. Construction of a new flow-through rockfill structure was constructed downstream of the existing dam in the winter 2011. Post construction flow monitoring started following the rehabilitation construction; to date there have been no notable changes to the downstream channel flows.
