ABSTRACT: Due to the rapid growth of world population and lack of suitable land for construction, embankments are widely constructed on soft soil deposits at present. However, there are many problems associated with constructing embankments over soft soils, such as large settlements over a long period of time due to consolidation of foundation soil and instability of the embankment as a result of undesirable characteristics of soft soil such as high compressibility, insufficient shear strength and low bearing capacity. Geosynthetic reinforced pile-supported (GRPS) embankments are considered to be a reliable solution for the problem of embankment construction on soft foundation soils. This paper presents a three-dimensional numerical study using the finite element method conducted on a GRPS embankment in order to investigate the load transfer mechanism. Three dimensional model results are compared with the existing design methods, to observe the inconsistencies of currently available design methods.
