Bearing capacity of strip footings near slopes using upper bound limit analysis

ABSTRACT: Stability of foundations near slopes is one of the important and complicated problems in geotechnical engineering which has been investigated by various analytical and numerical methods. Current paper describes an upper bound solution for estimation of bearing capacity of strip footings near slopes. The solution is based on finite element formulation and linear programming technique which leads to a collapse load throughout a kinematically admissible velocity field. Three-noded triangular finite elements are used for meshing the domain of the problem and velocity discontinuities occur at common edges of adjacent elements. Mohr-Coulomb yield function and associated flow rule is adopted for the soil behavior. The average limit pressure of the footing is considered as a function of dimensionless parameters affecting the stability of footing-on-slope system. These parameters, particularly the friction angle of the soil, have been investigated separately and relevant charts have been presented consequently.

RÉSUMÉ: La stabilité des fondations basées à proximité des talus constitue un problème complexe de la géotechnique, et a été étudiée suivant différentes méthodes analytiques et numériques. Le présent article décrit une résolution de ce problème par l'approche cinématique de l'analyse limite utilisant la méthode des éléments finis et la technique de la programmation linéaire. Les éléments du maillage sont des éléments triangulaires à trois nœuds, les discontinuités de vitesse se produisant à travers des bords entre les éléments adjacents. Le critère de plasticité de Mohr-Coulomb, ainsi que la loi de normalité ont été choisis pour définir le comportement du sol. La pression limite moyenne de la fondation à été déterminée en fonction des paramètres sans dimensions et les diagrammes appropriés, particulièrement ceux relatives à l'influence de l™angle de frottement intérieur du sol, ont été présentés.
