ABSTRACT: A comprehensive database of geotechnical test data for Northern Ontario cohesive soils was statistically analyzed to evaluate the reliability of commonly used empirical correlations between laboratory index test results and engineering properties, including effective friction angle (f™), compression index (Cc), recompression index (Cr) and secondary compression index/strain (C(e) and C()). Improved correlations are suggested for Northern Ontario cohesive soils, especially for secondary compression indices. These results will be particularly useful to engineers undertaking preliminary analyses where only limited in situ and/or laboratory index test results are available and must be used to estimate engineering properties for design and also as a check on the results from high complexity laboratory tests.
