Performance of Highway Embankment on Peat Deposits Constructed under Winter Conditions

ABSTRACT: Test sections of a newly constructed highway on peat were instrumented to investigate their performance and to develop more economical means of construction method. Test Section ‚A™ was constructed with geotextile base layer while Section ‚B™ was with geotextile and corduroy (timber logs). The test sections were constructed during winter for ease in mobilizing construction equipment at the site when the ground was frozen. The instrumentation includes measurements of settlements, ground temperatures, and pore water pressure. This paper presents measured data from the instruments during one year following embankment construction.

RÉSUMÉ: Des sections d™essais d™une route récemment construite sur la fondrière ont été instrumenté pour investiguer leur performance et pour développer des moyens de constructions plus économiques. La section d™essais ™A™ a été construit et renforcer avec une base de géotextile tant que section ‚B™ était construite avec géotextile et des rondins (bois de construction). Les sections d™essais ont été construites pendant l™hiver pour faciliter la mobilisation de l™équipement de construction sur le site où la terre était gelée. Les instruments incluent des mesures de règlement, des températures de la terre et la pression de l™eau interstitielle. Ce papier présent des données mesurées des instruments pendant une année suivant la construction de la levée.
