ABSTRACT: Research is being undertaken to improve understanding of mechanisms and processes associated with the performance of highway embankments on degrading permafrost. Changes in temperature lead to thawing which can result in potentially dangerous trafficability issues. Understanding the controlling mechanisms that produce poor performance will assist in selecting suitable remedial options. The focus of this research is a section of embankment along Provincial Road (PR) 391 located about 18 km north of Thompson, MB. Instrumentation was installed at the shoulder, mid-slope, and toe of the embankment in 2008. Additional instrumentation was installed in September 2012 for further analysis and numerical modelling. Data are now being collected remotely by satellite. The paper reports the analysis and synthesis of data from the recent monitoring periods.
