ABSTRACT: The American Concrete Pipe Association™s PipeCAR software is a useful tool widely used in Canadian practice for the design of reinforced concrete pipes. PipeCAR is based on AASHTO™s Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications, whereas Canadian codes use the Limit-States (LS) design method. Hence, its conformance with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) requirements needs to be evaluated. In this paper, PipeCAR results were validated per the requirements of ASCE 15-98 and the AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications and were compared with CHBDC requirements. Additionally, the validity of the Heger pressure distribution used in all of the above standards is verified using finite element analysis under a several heights of fill and soil conditions in trench installations.
