Grain-size distribution effects on the mechanical behaviour of granular materials

ABSTRACT: This paper provides an overview of the current understanding of the effects of particle size distributions of granular material on its mechanical behaviour based on the available data published in geotechnical engineering books, theses, and journals. The effects of particle size on two fundamental mechanical properties of granular material namely; small strain shear modulus and hydraulic conductivity is detailed reviewed and discussed. These effects are presented from the viewpoint of micro-mechanics (at particle contact level), which has a strong connection to the overall mechanical response of the granular material.

RÉSUMÉ: Cet article donne un aperçu sur les connaissances actuelles des effets des distributions de la taille des particules sur le comportement mécanique des matériaux granulaires en se basant sur des données disponibles et publiées dans des livres de géotechniques, des thèses et des revues. Les effets de la taille des particules sur les deux propriétés mécaniques fondamentales du matériau granulaire à savoir, les petites déformations du module de cisaillement et la conductivité hydraulique, sont détaillés, examinés et discutés. En effet, ces effets sont présentés micro-mécaniquement (au niveau de contact entre les particules), chose qui a un fort lien avec la réponse mécanique globale du matériau granulaire.
