Cyclic behaviour of an unsaturated compacted cohesionless till

ABSTRACT: The dynamic behaviour of a compacted cohesionless till from northern Quebec was studied in the laboratory. The tests were carried out using a DCSS-v2 apparatus built by GDS Instruments. This cyclic simple shear device was modified in order to achieve full control of the confining stresses applied on the samples and to allow the application of back pressure during saturation of the samples. Cyclic simple shear tests were performed on cylindrical specimens of cohesionless till compacted at initial water contents higher than the water content at optimum Proctor. This article presents the apparatus used and the preliminary results of the study.

RÉSUMÉ: Le comportement cyclique d™un till pulvérulent compacté a été étudié en laboratoire. Les essais ont été réalisés à l™aide d™une machine DCSS-v2 construite par la compagnie GDS Instruments. Cet appareillage de cisaillement simple cyclique a été modifié pour permettre le contrôle des contraintes de confinement appliquées sur les échantillons et pour permettre l™application d™une contre-pression lors de la saturation des échantillons. Des essais de cisaillement simple ont été effectués sur des échantillons cylindriques compactés à une teneur en eau supérieure à la teneur en eau à l™optimum Proctor. Cet article présente l™appareillage utilisé ainsi que les résultats préliminaires de cette étude.
