ABSTRACT: A special oedometer cell has been developed to study the behavior of rockfill during construction and impoundment of rockfill dams. One of the major difficulties of one-dimensional compression testing is that a part of the vertical load applied on a specimen is transferred to the inside walls of the oedometer cell by friction. Thus, the vertical stress distribution along the specimen depth is not constant. The friction component was measured for specimens of different heights and different grading in order to highlight the influence of those two parameters. The results show that friction increases with increasing height of specimen while unit shear stress at the wall decreases with increasing height. The results also show that the friction appears to increase with increasing void ratio. It is observed that the presence of water induces vertical deformations that slightly influence side friction.
