Experimental study of the small strain and large strain elastic parameters of thickened tailings

ABSTRACT: Laboratory tests have been performed in order to evaluate the shear behavior of thickened mine tailings. The samples were first submitted to triaxial tests. CU and CD static tests were performed at confining pressures of 125 kPa, 250 kPa and 500 kPa, for an initial density of 1515 kg/m3. Simultaneously, measurements of shear wave velocities were performed in a modified oedometric device using a method developed at the University of Sherbrooke. Through this test, the variation of the small strain shear modulus (Gmax) as a function of density was obtained. Gmax was then compared to the large strain shear modulus coming from triaxial tests. Numerical simulations using the hyperbolic elastic model were then used to interpret the laboratory results and improve the parameter determination.

RÉSUMÉ: Des essais de laboratoire ont fait furent menés à des confinements de 125 kPa, 250 kPa et 500 kPa, avec une densité initiale de 1515 kg/m3a été effectuée dans un appareil oedométrique modifié, selon une méthode développée ité de Sherbrooke. Cette procédure a permis faible déformation (Gmaxmax fut alors comparé au module de cisaillement à is triaxiaux et oedométriques standards. Finalement, des simulations numériques ont été réalisées à partir du modèle hyperbolique élastique dans le but de mieux interpréter les résultats de laboratoire .
