ABSTRACT: An experimental investigation on the coefficient of earth pressure of overconsolidated cohesionless soil around large displacement model piles was conducted. Overconsolidation was achieved by placing the soil in the testing tank in layers applying a different compaction effort to each test series. The stresses in the sand mass were measured by way of pressure transducer units placed in the deposit. The instrumented pile was driven into the sand mass to a selected depth and unloaded. The pile load test was then started at a constant rate of penetration. The process was then repeated for different relative depths. The ultimate load capacity was determined from load-displacement curves. It is of interest to note that the shaft resistance and, hence, the coefficient of earth pressure around the pile showed significant dependency on the state of overconsolidation of the sand mass.
