Durability and long-term strength of seams in HDPE geomembranes

ABSTRACT: High density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes (GMB) represent an essential component of the liner system for many municipal solid waste landfills. They are also used for a wide range of applications in the mining industry. The GMB properties and the welding method are key factors affecting liner performance. This paper describes an experimental examination of the ageing of GMB seams immersed in synthetic leachate at four different temperatures. The tests initially examine antioxidant depletion. Once the antioxidants deplete, peel and shear tests will be performed to monitor later stages of seam performance. The tests are intended to provide insight regarding the durability of the seams and will help to provide an estimate of the service life of the seams.
RÉSUMÉ: Les géomembranes à base de polyéthylène à haute densité (PEHD) représentent une composante essentielle du système de confinement de nombreuses décharges municipales de déchets solides. Ils sont également utilisés pour une large gamme d'applications dans l'industrie minière. Les propriétés de la GMB et la méthode de soudage sont des aspects-clés affectant la performance du confinement. Ce document décrit un examen expérimental du vieillissement de soudures des GMB immergés dans le lixiviat synthétique à quatre températures différentes. Dans un premier temps, les tests visent à examiner l™épuisement des antioxydants. Une fois les antioxydants épuisés, des tests d'arrachement et de cisaillement seront effectués pour suivre l™évolution des performances de la soudure. Les essais visent à donner un aperçu de la durabilité des soudures et aideront à fournir une estimation de leur durée de vie.
