ABSTRACT: This paper presents results of complex permittivity measurements in lead contaminated soils. Three lead salts (PbCl2, PbSO4, and Pb(NO3)2) at different concentrations are mixed with soil. The lead salts used in this investigation have different water solubility. The lead concentrations for soil range between 200 ppm and 1000ppm. The lowest concentration was chosen according to the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy (MOEE, 1996) guideline for residential areas, while the highest concentration was based on the allowable lead concentration for industrial areas. The objective of this paper is to investigate the relationship between soil complex permittivity and lead concentrations in various forms, which could be used as an indicator to detect soil contamination with lead. Preparation of lead contaminated soil samples along with the physical and chemical properties of the soil samples and the pore water are discussed first in this paper followed by a discussion of the pore fluid chemistry and the results of the complex permittivity measurements in soil and pore water. The results in this paper reveal that the complex permittivity is sensitive to changes in lead concentrations in soil, which indicates that the complex permittivity can be used to monitor lead contamination in soil.
