ABSTRACT: The HPD model was implemented into the commercially available finite difference code FLAC to simulate the behaviour of LG4 dam during construction and reservoir filling. A simple nonlinear elastic model was coupled to a Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and a non-associated flow rule to consider shear induced dilatancy. A stress relaxation technique was used to model the collapse of granular material due to saturation. The results of the modeling showed good agreement with field data for both construction and first reservoir filling. At the end of construction, the maximum settlements were located at mid-height of the core and were about 24 cm. After the first filling of the reservoir, the maximum settlements were near the crest and on the upstream side of the dam due to the collapse of the upstream elements after saturation. The predictions with the HPD model resulted in slightly larger settlements and displacements than simpler nonlinear elastic models.
