Measuring down-hole shear waves from a vibrating perpetual source during Cone Penetration Testing

ABSTRACT: A profile of in-situ shear wave velocities can be measured during cone penetration testing using the perpetual-source technique. This was developed using a continuous shear wave source with three down-hole geophones. A bias in the shear wave velocity was observed between the geophone pairs. It was desired to adapt the perpetual source technique to use only one geophone. This was accomplished by recording a periodic signal from the perpetual seismic source. All of the recorded down-hole signals were aligned to this periodic source signal. The perpetual-source technique can now be performed using single-geophone seismic cones. The source of the bias between pairs of geophones has not been identified.
RÉSUMÉ: La technique de « source perpétuelle » permet de mesurer le profil de la vitesse in-situ des ondes de cisaillement lors de puits. Un biais dans la vitesse des ondes de cisaillement fût observé entre les signaux des géophones. Il y avait un enregistrant de façon périodique un signal provenant de la source sismique. Tous les signaux des géophones de puits étaient alignés avec le signal de cette source périodique. La technique de « source perpétuelle » peut maintenant être encore été déterminée.
