Influence of heterogeneity on the hydro-thermal response of an embankment dam

ABSTRACT: Heterogeneity in compacted till cores is a consequence of variability in source material and compaction conditions. Heterogeneity affects the hydraulic conductivity of the impervious core. This paper deals essentially with a numerical analysis of the hydro-thermal response of dam QA-01, in northern Quebec, using a coupled heat and mass transfer formulation and input parameters obtained from existing studies. Temperature distributions and time lag were used to evaluate the predictions for various conditions associated with the presence of pervious layers in the impervious core. The best agreement between predictions and observations was obtained by using the hydraulic conductivity profile inferred from a geostatistical analysis based on laboratory and construction control data.
RÉSUMÉ: L™hétérogénéité des noyaux de till compacté est une conséquence de la variabilité du matériau source et des conditions de compactage. L™hétérogénéité influence la conductivité hydraulique du noyau imperméable. Cet article décrit la réponse thermo-hydraulique du barrage QA-01 situé dans le Nord québécois. La réponse est obtenue à l™aide d™une analyse numérique du transfert couplé de chaleur et de masse en utilisant des paramètres obtenus lors d™études antérieures. Les distributions de température et le déphasage dans le temps ont été utilisés pour évaluer les prédictions pour différentes conditions associées à la présence de couches perméables dans le noyau imperméable. La meilleure correspondance entre les prédictions et les observations a été obtenue avec le profil de conductivité hydraulique estimé à partir des résultats d™une analyse géostatistique utilisant des données de laboratoire et de surveillance en pahse de construction.
