Rockfill size evaluation using digital image analysis

ABSTRACT: Field evaluation of rockfill grain size distributions is fraught with difficulties due to the large particle sizes involved. A novel method was tested by Hydro Québec to overcome these difficulties by using digital image analysis to evaluate large particle diameters and later determine grain size distributions of rockfills. This paper presents the technical aspects underlying digital image analysis and how it can be used in a dam safety context. The presented practical case studies will outline the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed approach and how it can be a useful tool for dam safety analyses.
RÉSUMÉ: L™évaluation de la granulométrie des enrochements est difficile à réaliser sur le terrain compte tenu de la grande taille des particules. Afin de pallier à ces difficultés, une méthode novatrice d™analyse d™images numériques a été testée par Hydro Québec pour l™évaluation de la taille d™enrochements de grand diamètre et la détermination de courbes granulométriques. Cet article présente les aspects techniques reliés à cette méthode et comment elle peut être utilisée dans un contexte de sécurité des barrages. Des études de cas sont présentées afin de montrer les forces et les faiblesses de l™approche proposée et comment elle peut être utile à l™évaluation de la sécurité de barrages en remblai.
