ABSTRACT: In the simplified procedure developed by Seed and Idriss (1971) for estimating the potential for liquefaction triggering, horizontal cyclic shear stresses induced by seismic loading are determined from peak ground surface acceleration and the shear stress reduction coefficient rd. The different relationships proposed in the literature for calculating this coefficient have been established for soil profiles and strong motion records mostly from Western North America. In Eastern Canada, the simplified procedure tends to overestimate shear stresses considerably. We show that this discrepancy is related to the soil and ground motion characteristics in Eastern Canada.
