ABSTRACT: A significant challenge in the geomechanical design of underground mine backfill systems is predicting the backfill™s as-placed geotechnical properties. Three case studies from different mines are described where the backfill was extensively instrumented during backfilling and curing, and where undisturbed backfill sampling was subsequently attempted. Integrated interpretation of this data suggests that freshly placed fill remains in a state of hydrostatic total stress and zero effective stress for several hours, during which time hydration begins. By the time effective stresses develop, the backfill™s evolving strength and stiffness appear to largely resist volume change. This has important implications for binder efficiency and suggests that new mix designs are required to enhance the overall effectiveness of the backfill systems at the studied mines.
