ABSTRACT: The McMurray oil sands are very dense uncemented sands known for showing a high shear strength and stiffness due to their dense interlocking grain structure. Design capacities for drilled shafts founded in oil sands have been on the conservative side due to the lack of sufficient load test data and an appropriately calibrated design approach. This paper presents details and results of five Osterberg cell (O-cell) tests performed on 750-mm and 1,500-mm diameter drilled shafts installed to total depths between 15.7 and 26 m below existing grade and with embedment depths of about 6.8 to 12.4 m into oil sands. Given the large loading required, O-cell tests are more economical than the top-down tests, and therefore, were used to provide shaft and base ultimate capacities and load-displacement behavior separately. Results of these tests were compared with the results of few other O-Cell tests previously performed in oil sands and a new design methodology to estimate the axial capacity of drilled shafts in oil sands is proposed.
