Measurement and simulation of the large strain consolidation of AMD treatment sludge

ABSTRACT: Physical and numerical modeling of large strain consolidation of acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment sludge has been performed. The laboratory program included consolidation tests conducted in a large size instrumented column. The relationships between the void ratio e, vertical effective stress ™, and hydraulic conductivity k have been obtained from these tests. The SIGMA/W code (Geo-Slope) was used for the simulations. The finite element modelling included an updating scheme for key parameters during the calculations, with adaptive time steps. The results show that the simulations represent well the experimental observations, in terms of surface displacements, strains (which can exceed 50%), and pore water pressure distribution over time and position.

RÉSUMÉ: Une modélisation physique et numérique de la consolidation en grandes déformations a été réalisée sur des boues de traiment d™eaux de drainage minier acides (DMA). Le programme de laboratoire comprenait des essais de consolidation dans une grande colonne instrumentée. Les relations entre l'indice des vides e, la contrainte effective verticale ' et la conductivité hydraulique k ont été obtenues à partir de ces essais. Le code SIGMA/W (Geo-Slope) a été utilisé pour les simulations. Cette modélisation par éléments finis comprenait un processus de mise à jour des paramètres clés lors des étapes de calcul, avec un contrôle adaptatif des pas de temps. Les résultats numériques représentent bien les mesures expérimentales, pour les déplacements à la surface, les déformations (qui peuvent excéder 50%) et la distribution des pressions insterstitielles en fonction du temps et de la position.
