ABSTRACT: Shallow geothermal energy can substantially reduce heating and cooling costs for residential or institutional buildings. Some optimization of subsurface conditions or backfilling different soils might be warranted to improve efficiency of heat exchange for larger buildings. This idea is explored by employing a commercial software to analyze coupled heat and moisture flow around a simulated heat exchanger for different soil profiles and groundwater conditions. The modelling approach is partially validated by comparing its predictions with those of another published numerical method. It is demonstrated that varying the soil profile does influence the exchange of heat. While the magnitude of the differences is small, this may reflect limitations of the modelling methodology, and further investigations are warranted.
