ABSTRACT: In this paper we report on the interpretation of field vane shear testing at the National Canadian Geotechnical Research site in Gloucester, Ontario. Previously published investigations of the Champlain/Leda clay that underlies this site have observed cemented particle aggregates. We examined three different techniques for estimating the yield-stress ratio from field vane test results in the Champlain/Leda clay that underlies this site. We observed that all three vane interpretation methods provided similar results that were larger than laboratory reported values. We performed a seismic piezocone test and calculated the ratio of the shear stiffness to net tip resistance. For this soil, it appears that strength is a better indication of cemented particle bonds than stiffness.
