ABSTRACT: This paper investigates the probabilistic nature of differential settlement between two identical piles founded in a spatially variable linearly elastic soil. A theoretical model is developed, and validated by simulation, which is then used to calculate the probability of excessive differential settlement. The theoretical model can be employed in the design of individual piles to avoid excessive differential settlements.
