ABSTRACT: It is commonly known that driven steel pipe piles often gain capacity over a period of time after initial driving, which is --up can be significant, designers often elect to neglect it during pile design unless the set-up capacity can be verified by field data such as pile load tests and/or Pile Dynamic Analyzer (PDA) tests. Empirical relationships for predicting pile set-up capacity over time have been established by a number of researchers based on field test data obtained from different soil types at different sites. The objective of this paper is to document the procedures used and establish an empirical relationship based on the field test data obtained at the Fort Hills Secondary Extraction project site which would allow better estimation of pile set-up capacity and in turn, optimize the future driven steel pipe pile designs at Fort Hills. The benefits of a pile load testing program as part of the design, and importance of a well-defined QA/QC program are also discussed.
