ABSTRACT: This paper presents the development and implementation of a multi-geohazard semi-quantitative risk assessment framework for a specific railway corridor. The risk assessment system estimates the relative risk of loss of life due to a train derailment resulting from a geohazard occurrence. The methodology presented examines the threat from five different geohazard types in a consistent framework facilitating the evaluation of the different geohazard types on a consistent risk scale. The geohazard risk assessment information is stored in an online map-based database. The output of the semi-quantitative risk estimation methodology is a risk rating between Level 1 and Level 7 for each credible geohazard affecting the railway. The risk rating level distinguishes the order of magnitude annual probability of loss of life from geohazards along the railway. The risk ratings are used to aid in the prioritization of risk management efforts, which include annual inspections and risk control works. This paper presents the semi-quantitative geohazard risk rating methodology and a high-level description of the various types of geohazards considered. The methodology is grounded in field-based site characterization, analysis of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional remote sensing data, and expert opinion.
