ABSTRACT: The early time pore pressure response of vibrating wire pressure transducers during piezometer grouting was used to estimate the hydraulic conductivity, K, for the Lachenaie clay deposit. The assessment of clay K is important to assess the vulnerability of groundwater from surficial contamination. From a geotechnical viewpoint, K is an important factor in problems regarding consolidation and slope stability issues in clay. The K value was between 1×10-10 and 6×10-10 m/s according to the analysis of the early pore pressure response of piezometers during piezometer grouting. The obtained values are in good agreement, at the lower bound, with previous in-situ results obtained from usual in-situ tests. The early time pore pressure due to piezometer grouting was dissipated in less than one day. This method yields a quick estimation of clay aquitard hydraulic conductivity, which can be used in conjunction with other methods (e.g., pulse test) for site characterisations and engineering applications.
