On undrained shear strength of low plasticity glacial clays from in-situ vane, CPT, DMT and SPT tests

ABSTRACT: This paper presents comparisons of the undrained shear strength of low to medium plasticity clayey silt deposits tested at over 400 locations by means of boreholes with SPT profiles, MTO and Nilcon vanes, CPTs and DMTs along with laboratory identification, compressibility and triaxial shear tests. These tests were carried out to support the design of an 11.5 km-long new highway crossing the Windsor, ON urban area. The slightly undulating ground along the project site slopes gradually towards the Detroit River and is underlain by thick Essex Clay Plain formation. The variability of the clayey deposits along the length of the project provided a unique opportunity to compare the results obtained from different field test methods.

RÉSUMÉ: Cette article compare les résistances au cisaillement non-drainées de différents dépôts de limon argileux de faible à km traversant la zone urbaine de Windsor, ON. Les dépôts argileux ont été testés sur 400 sites avec différentes méthodes incluant des forages avec profils SPT, des essais aux scissomètres conventionnels et Nilcon, aux pénétromètres coniques (CPT) et aux dilatomètres (DMT), et e de la compressibilité et du cisaillement triaxiallégèrement vallonné, en pencomparer des résultats obtenus avec les différ
