ABSTRACT: Traffic worldwide is increasing at the same rate or even higher as the population growth. The need for placing transport infrastructure underground is growing in cities nowadays since above ground land is unavailable or very expensive especially in urban locations. Hence the interaction between newly constructed foundations and existing tunnels is unavoidable especially in the case of deep foundations. Thus it is an important to study the interaction between tunnels and piled foundations in details. This paper presents results obtained using a 3D finite element model to estimate the effect of a newly constructed tunnel on existing high rise building supported on piled foundations. The proposed 3D model used the newly develop shotcrete material model in Plaxis that was modified to model the reinforced concrete elements of the tunnel lining. Utilizing the developed FE model the characteristics of the soil-structure interaction were studied and the criteria for the safety of the structures were accordingly proposed.
