Static Load Tests of CFA piles in Edmonton Area and Challenges

ABSTRACT: Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles have seen increasing usage in the Edmonton area over the past decade. Load testing of CFA piles also became prevalent to realize a higher geotechnical resistance factor and to optimize the geotechnical pile design parameters. Since 2008, Tetra Tech EBA has been involved in 18 static load tests on instrumented CFA piles in the Edmonton area. A high level summary of the load test results is presented. Challenges associated with test execution and analysis are discussed, including test result interpretation, residual load, and concrete curing, etc. Some recommendations on planning and performing future load tests are also presented.

RÉSUMÉ: (Continuous Flight Auger) ont vu une croissance dans la région d'Edmonton. Les tests de charge sur les pieux CFA sont également devenus une norme pour produire un facteur de résistance géotechnique supérieur et afin d'optimiser les paramètres de conception géotechnique des pieux. Depuis Tetra Tech EBA a été impliqué dans 18 tests de charge statique sur des pieux a tarière CFA avec instrumentations. Un sommaire des résultats des tests de charge est présenté. Les défis liés à l'exécution et à l'analyse test sont aussi discutés, y compris l'interprétation des résultats, la charge résiduelle, et le durcissement du béton, etc. Certaines recommandations sur la planification et la réalisation future de tests de charge sont également inclus.
