Sophistication of Triaxial Testing Procedure for Residual Soil

ABSTRACT: In tropical countries, triaxial or other laboratory element testing on residual soil are the most in demands but often pose significant difficulties in obtaining reliable effective stress parameters on samples with a completely saturated state. This is because the residual soils are usually in unsaturated state having high percentages of fines, and therefore the saturation with ordinal level of backpressure is vey difficult. A triaxial test system using vacuum saturation is presented by using electro pneumatic pressure transducers plus vacuum generators. With this sophistication of the system, an undrained triaxial compression test on unsaturated residual soil can be completed within a day from the specimen setup to the undrained shear with pore water pressure measurement. The verification of the system is confirmed by some consolidated undrained triaxial testing results on a typical Malaysian residual soil.

RÉSUMÉ: Dans les pays tropicaux, les essais d'éléments de laboratoire triaxial ou autre sur le sol résiduel est le plus en demande, mais pose souvent des difficultés importantes pour obtenir des paramètres fiable de contrainte effective sur des échantillons avec un état complètement saturé. En effet, les sols résiduels sont généralement dans un état non-saturé ayant des pourcentages élevés de grains fins, et donc la saturation avec le niveau ordinal de contrepression est vey difficile. Un système triaxial en utilisant la saturation à vide est présenté en utilisant des transducteurs de pression électroniques, plus générateurs de vide. Avec cette sophistication du système , un essai de compression triaxiale non drainée sur le sol résiduel non-saturé peut être achevé un jour de l' échantillon pour un essai non drainé avec mesure de pression interstitielle. La vérification du système est confirmée par quelques tests triaxiaux consolidés non drainés sur un sol résiduel Malaysien typique.
