ABSTRACT: With an increase in the number and types of MSE walls systems and also with recent promotion of alternate Design Methodologies and Philosophies we feel it is time to review the basic Design Methodologies that the MSE walls were originally based on and explain why we feel it is important to adhere to these tried and true approaches that have provided owners with safe and durable structures for the past 50 years. This paper will review the important items involved in a prudent design including, Coherent Gravity Design Method, t, Failure Modes, and Local Equilibrium approaches.
