ABSTRACT: Although dilation behavior of granular soils has been well examined as a function of their initial state and stress ratio, the proposed relationships has not been adequately examined to provide a clear insight into the effect of the particle characteristics (e.g. size and shape). In this paper, the effect of particle size distribution on empirical correlations (Bolton 1986, and Schanz and Vermeer 1996) is investigated through a series of triaxial laboratory tests on three different materials made up of rounded to angular particles. It has been demonstrated that, in the investigated range of 63 m<D50<1000 m, the maximum dilation rate cannot be described by a unique function of dilatancy index equation, and for a given material the coefficients a decreases with increasing D50. Based on triaxial test results, the parameter a at the well-on has been correlated with D50, and the resultant dilation rate values are validated through the comparison with dilation data from literature.
