Session: SOIL AND TERRAIN CHARACTERIZATION - VII Instrumentation & Monitoring

ABSTRACT: Thirty-five years ago seismic sensors were added to the piezocone probe to create the seismic cone penetration test (SCPTu). The CPTu test is a well established tool for geotechnical soil characterization. By adding shear and compression wave velocity measurements, SCPTu results can be used to characterize small-strain stiffness, cementation, density, compressibility, age, and susceptibility to cyclic liquefaction. We have reviewed the development of the seismic sources, seismic cone modules, test procedures, and interpretation of the SCPTu. We have complemented published literature with new data traces to demonstrate findings. We conclude with suggested areas for future research.
