Highway 407 East Extension Footings on Granular Pads

ABSTRACT: Footings founded on a granular pad have been commonly used as a means of foundation soil improvement in Ontario. The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario has accepted such footings designed for up to 350 kPa geotechnical reaction at SLS. For the Highway 407 East Extension project, the geotechnical consultant recommended a higher value, based on recent studies of the bearing capacity of footings and on experiences in Quebec. During construction, pressure cells and borehole extensometers were installed under three bridge abutment footings to measure the actual pressures and settlements of the footings, in an attempt to verify the acceptability of the higher design pressure. The results are presented in this paper.
RÉSUMÉ: Des semelles fondées sur un coussin granulaire ont été couramment utilisées comme un moyen d'amélioration des sols de fondation en Ontario. Le ministère des Transports de l'Ontario a accepté de telles semelles conçues pour une résistance géotechnique aux états limites de service maximum de 350 kPa. Pour le projet du prolongement de la route 407 Est, le consultant géotechnique a recommandé une valeur supérieure basée sur les récentes études de capacité portante des semelles ainsi sur ses expériences au Québec. Pendant la construction, des cellules de pression et des extensomètres installés dans des forages ont été placés sous trois semelles de culée de pont afin de mesurer les pressions réelles et les tassements des semelles, dans le but de résistance géotechnique. Les résultats sont présentés dans le présent document.
